Charter fishing Etiquette is essential. Etiquette will always gain you respect by others. It’s also the same when participating in a fishing charter. If you haven’t been on a fishing tour before or you have been on plenty, we at True Blue Fishing have come up with a few tips which will help make your next deep sea fishing trip a more pleasurable experience for everyone on board.

Use your Manners

Having manners onboard or off will always go a long way. If there’s something not going your way, speak to the Skipper and deckhand with courtesy. The crew will always go above and beyond to assist if you are polite, making the trip more pleasant and enjoyable. Lets face it, no one likes to be spoken to in a rude manner.

Be Flexible with Your Itinerary

Although Skippers are very skilled and extremely knowledgeable about ocean conditions, they cannot control weather and other unforeseen occurrences. So, when the Skipper calls to cancel your charter due to safety and weather concerns, you just have to trust his years of experience and expert judgment. In some instances, your captain may offer an alternate trip such as Broadwater cruising or calm water fishing. Of course, if you prefer, you can reschedule or request a refund of your deposit.

Tell the Skipper and Crew What You Would Like to Target

Don’t forget to talk to your skipper about your experience. Before your trip, tell them what kind of fishing you prefer. Whether you’re aiming for a specific target fish to, fishing methods you like (or don’t like). The more info you provide, the better for them to help manage your expectations. Sea sickness

Unfortunately many people suffer from motion sickness. Prevention is the best cure. If you are concerned you might be sick while on your charter. Consult your local pharmacist, there are several different medications and devices available.

If you are going to vomit while onboard. Don’t ruin the experience for others. Head for the down wind side and vomit straight into the ocean. Do not vomit in the toilet, sink or garbage bins. If it goes over the side the smell is gone instantly.

What and What Not to Wear

There are not many restrictions when it comes to what you wear for a fishing charter, wear something comfortable that is suitable for the season. The footwear, however, is another story. High heel shoes will lead to a broken ankle! You may wear boat shoes, sneaker or thong for your trip.

A size legal limit allows fish between 40 and 75 centimetres to be kept, with the larger breeding females legally required to be released to continue the breeding cycle.

In addition to the resident Flathead, schools of Bream are thick through the winter months. Giant and Big-Eye Trevally tend to turn up in the warmer months. Mulloway and Tailor are prolific in areas with a bit more depth and Mangrove jacks are always a favourite for those who take the time to target them.Gold coast Seaway
A great tip for Gold coast estuary fishing is to fish as light as possible. A 6-7’ spin rod with a matched threadline reel, or a similar sized bait caster outfit spooled with 6-10lb braid, and 15lb leader will handle most of the critters that call the local estuaries home. By fishing light, you can cast further and not spook fish in shallow waters.

Gold Coast Fishing Spots

The Gold Coast is famous for sun, surf, sandy beaches, nightlife, skyscrapers and it’s complex maze of canal systems and pristine waterways. Despite being Australia’s biggest boating mecca with high water traffic and huge fishing pressure, Gold Coast fishing spots still produce sensational fishing all year round.

Gold coast Broadwater

Very popular stretch of water extending from Southport right through to southern Moreton bay. The Broadwater produces mostly Bream, Whiting, trevally, Flathead and Mulloway. Productive areas can be found around the seaway walls and along the many sand flats that stretch along the banks.

Sand Pumping Jetty

Located at the Northern end of the spit, this is a great prospect for land based anglers, Tailor, Mulloway, Bream, and Dart are taken regularly here and in summer the odd spotted and Spanish Gold coast fishing spots offshoremackerel can be caught too.

Gold Coast Creeks, Rivers & Canals

The Gold Coast waters are almost completely free from commercial fishing pressure. As a result, the local estuaries produce some sensational fishing for both land based and boat anglers.

Gold Coast creeks, canal systems and rivers produce catches of, Bream, Flathead, whiting, Trevally, and estuary Cod are regularly caught throughout the many creeks, canals and rivers. Flathead are caught year round, but they are most prolific during Spring. Mangrove Jack are a very popular target species over the summer months. Bream school up in the clear waters near the entrances of canals and the seaway during Winter. This can make for some great action fishing with lures or fresh baits.

Mulloway lurk around the estuaries for those fishos that are willing to put the time and effort into chasing them. The best time of the year to target big jewies is the through the cooler months, Live mullet if you can get them are the number one bait. Prime Gold coast fishing spots for those wishing to chase them include Jumpinpin, The pipeline across the seaway, and along the Seaway walls.

Nerang River

The Nerang River still seems to produce some quality fishing. The best time to fish the river is early morning or evening preferably Monday to Friday as there is less boats traffic. There is tonnes of structure to work in the river. The river produces Bream, Trevally, Flathead, Cod and Mangrove Jack and if you venture into the upper reaches during summer you will find Bass too.

A shallow sandy creek with some nice weed beds The creek produces Bream, Whiting and Flathead, and also produces Mangrove Jacks mainly in Summer.

Currumbin Creek
Currumbin Creek is great for kayaks and land based fishing. Excellent fishing for Bream, Whiting, Flathead and Mangrove Jacks. Further upstream you can target Bass during the warmer months.

The Gold Coast has over 30km’s of prime beach front that produces fish year round. Fishing for Bream and Dart, Tailor and Mulloway in the deep gutters is a popular pastime for tourists and locals alike. From May to September schools of Tailor also move along the beaches, and during Summer whiting will happily devour Pippis or beach worms.

Freshwater Spots
The are some great freshwater fishing spots within easy reach of the Gold coast. Australian Bass can be found in the upper reaches of all Gold coast rivers and creeks. A little further inland you willGold coast bass find Wyralong, Maroon and Moogerah dams.

The Gold Coast is home to some great offshore fishing. There are numerous reefs, gravel patches and interesting structure in close between 30-50 metres. For those with larger boats there are complex reef systems around the 36 and 50 fathom lines known to produce Snapper, Pearl Perch, Cobia, Mackerel and Tuna. Dolphin fish, Wahoo, Kingfish and Marlin are also regularly targeted. The offshore reef and game fishing at the Gold Coast is seasonal, as fish come and go with the change of water temperature.
